Your AC breaker is allowed to be bigger than the wire, and only the nameplate says how much bigger

Everyone plans for the changeout where the new unit needs more wire. The more common problem now is the reverse: the replacement draws less, the 45 amp breaker nobody touched is above the new unit's marked maximum, and doing nothing to the panel is what created the violation.
